CARE working through local NGO partners (AWAZ, SUNGI and EPS) developed community-based
emergency health interventions by establishing Half Way Homes (HWHs)/Recovery centers
for physiological and physical rehabilitation of women and children, especially
orphans in Mansehra and Shangla district, NWFP. Local district hospitals at the
time were not equipped to deal with such large quantities of casualties.
Patients of the HWHs were provided with accommodation, food, as well as medical
assistance for as long as necessary, and the family member selected as caregiver
were provided with access to the facility, including shelter, food, etc. The centers
involved community volunteers who functioned as community health worker (CHWs) and
health educators. The centers provided physiotherapy and physiological support to
people affected by the earthquake.
During the emergency phase, CARE through its implementing partners was able to provide
medical, physiological support and health and hygiene education to approximately
13,015 people especially women and children.
