CARE’s psychosocial project has a unique aspect – the program tries to re-lift ‘community spirit’ of communities who haven been isolated by the earthquake. The program aims to enable community members to actively pursue broad-based psychosocial activities which will strengthen and enhance coping mechanisms appropriate to the requirements of their communities.

The key objectives of the program are.

  reduce the risk of further psychosocial difficulties by facilitating the re-establishment of communal activities and structures which enhance communal living patterns;
  promote more active and adaptive coping mechanisms to both immediate and long-term stressors through community-level resiliency building activities;
  develop disaster reduction education programming to enhance preparedness and reduce fears and anxieties associated with survivors’ return to impacted areas

To help children return to their normal lives, we are sponsoring sporting events in three national pastimes: cricket, volleyball and archery. The earthquake caused families and communities to become more physically and emotionally isolated. By bringing communities together for these events, CARE helps strengthen the bonds between them. In addition hosting tournaments, we’ve established playgrounds in 12 villages to provide a safe area for boys and girls to play, away from the potential hazards of unstable buildings and debris.
