Provision of Basic and Immediate Shelter

The number of tents available for the relief operation was estimated to be approximately one-half the stated requirement. As a consequence, alternate types of shelter was required. Each option was assessed in terms of practicality, user acceptance, the level of protection provided in winter conditions, and deliverability. This last criterion, deliverability, was critical given the logistics constraints and the need to balance providing high-quality shelters to a few individuals with providing minimum life sustaining assistance to as many affected people as possible. During the emergency, in total, around 74,000 people - approximately 10,500 households were provided with shelter and other common household packages to prevent loss of lives and mitigate suffering of the quake victims. CARE was able to successfully raise funds in a very short time period from CARE member public fundraising as well as European, Canadian and Australian bilateral donors. In total, CARE raised US$ 11.8 million for initial relief and recovery operations.
