In response to the earthquake, emergency preparedness training has provided a way to address women’s education. By teaching women how to safeguard their homes and families, we are now have an opportunity to introduce them to vocational training, savings and credit.

In retrospect, CARE in conjunction with its local partners initiated a gender & development project in Mansehra and Shangla districts. The program has the following components:

  Women Mobilization
  Formation of women’s groups
  Vocational trainings
  Creating linkages to entrepreneurial institutes
  Establishment of microfinance enterprises
Organization of emergency response trainings including disaster management to equip local women with knowledge on how to deal with future emerging conditions

To date 52 women’s disaster management committees(DMCs) have been established. Moreover, 51 DMCs have received training on emergency preparedness. Vocational trainings skills that provide women with income generation opportunities have also started - a total of 30 women have been trained in sewing and sticthing. As an added bonus, when women come together, they begin to talk openly about common challanges and aspirations, working together and speaking with a stronger, more unified voice.
