The South Asian earthquake of 8th October 2005 resulted in considerable damage to the built and natural environment in Pakistan in 8 districts of northern Pakistan. A total of 4 million people were reported to be affected in the two provinces(Northern West Frontier Provinces & Pakistan administrated Kashmir) and were in need of assistance including shelter, medicine, food etc.
Next to the disaster’s death toll and injuries, destruction and damage to housing has had the most significant impact on disaster survivors. An estimated 400,000 housing units were destroyed or severely damaged in NWFP and PAK. In some areas, close to 100% of the housing stock was destroyed. In other areas, a significant part of the housing stock was either destroyed or rendered unsafe. Additionally, there has been significant damage to infrastructure including roads, schools, health clinics and hospitals in earthquake zone.

CARE Pakistan responded to the emergency by developing a three-phase Emergency Response Strategy comprising:

    1. Phase One: Relief (Oct 06 to Dec 05) – focused on the distribution of relief supplies.

  2. Phase Two: Recovery (Jan 05 to April 06) - focused on shelter winterization.

  3. Phase Three: Reconstruction & Rehabilitation (May onwards) – focuses on long term developmental projects in areas of education, health, infrastructure and livelihoods.
